Crystallizer is a continuous steel casting equipment that takes the molten steel from the tundish and solidifies it into a solid shell according to the specified section shape. It is one of the core components of the billet caster. Its structure, material and performance parameters play a decisive role in the casting billet quality and the production capacity of casting machine.


Ⅰ. The role of the mold in the continuous casting process mainly includes the following aspects.

1. The liquid steel gradually solidifies into a certain sized and shaped shell;

2. The mould vibration makes the billet shell free from the mold wall. And it can not break the billet shell, resulting in steel leakage;

3. Ensure that the billet shell uniformly and stably forms.


Ⅱ. Mould types mainly include the followings:

1. According to the shape of its inner wall, the mold can be divided into straight and curved ones.  

(1) straight crystallizer. The inner wall of the copper tube of the straight crystallizer does not have radian. It is suitable for vertical-bending continuous casting caster and vertical caster. The less than 80mm*80mm billet usually uses the vertical- bending caster to produce. The mold with the straight shaped copper tube is suitable for copper pipe making and installation. Sometimes, the straight mould is used to cast the large bloom, mainly considering improving the billet shell quality and increasing the casting speed.


(2) Curved crystallizer. The inner wall of the curved mold is curved shape in the billet shell movement direction, so the casting billet is not easy to get bending cracks. Arc molds are used in full arc and oval continuous casting machines.


2. According to its structure, the mould can be divided into tube-shaped and combined mold

(1) Tube-shaped mould: Its main components include copper tube, inner water jacket, outer water jacket, foot roller, etc. The inner water jacket is stainless steel, and the outer water jacket can be stainless steel or carbon steel according to the different requirements. Outer water jacket, inner water jacket, seals, flanges and so on constitute the cooling water system. In order to ensure the shape size of the billet, foot rollers are installed at the bottom of the mold to improve the pulling speed and prevent the billet off-square.


(2) Combined mold: The built-up mold is used for casting the slab, convenient to adjust the width of the casting slab. It mainly composed of 4 composite wall panels and outer frame with wide and narrow faces. The composite wall panel is composed of an inner copper plate and an outer water tank. There is a water gap between the two to cool the liquid steel. The composite wall panel is tightly clamped by a mechanism. Width and taper can be adjusted online. A foot roller and a protective grating plate are arranged at the lower end of the mold.
